Apollo Database Server Overview
Apollo Database Server

Description

Apollo Database Server is full-featured, high-performance SQL client/server DBMS. Apollo Database Server can manage xBase data over a LAN, Internet or Intranet. Move your xBase applications to true client/server computing with Apollo Database Server and start enjoying the benefits of client/server computing -- Apollo Database Server makes it easy and affordable!

Based on award-winning Apollo technology, the Apollo Database Server features Apollo SQL™, which is our powerful SQL-92 engine, server-side Stored Procedure support, built-in security, data compression, and much more. Since Apollo is a self-contained engine, ODBC, BDE and the JET are not required. In addition, database administration is non-existent.

Available Editions

The Apollo Database Server comes in several editions, each of which are royalty free and can be redistributed freely. In other words, buy once deploy many!

Getting Started

Apollo Database Server is as easy-to-use as it is flexible. Within minutes, an Apollo Database Server can be setup to manage multiple xBase databases (i.e. directories of xBase files) and multiple unique client applications. That means you can use a single Apollo Database Server to simultaneously support an Inventory application, Scheduling application and Accounting application -- each using separate database files, and each supporting a separate set of client connections. Simply move your xBase data files to the server where Apollo Database Server is installed, set up database aliases as required and grant user privileges.

Building Client Applications

Developers can use Apollo ASP, Apollo VCL, Apollo OLE DB or Apollo COM to build client-side database applications. The same code set can be configured to work as stand-alone applications (i.e. non-client/server), peer-to-peer systems, or these same Apollo applications can connect to an Apollo Database Server for true client/server performance.

Apollo applications can connect to tables located anywhere addressable by an IP address (e.g. 127.0.0.1) or domain name (e.g. www.vistasoftware.com). This means data can reside on a local, interoffice TCP/IP network, or on a web site located on the Internet.

Using Apollo VCL

Each Apollo VCL component has a connection property that provides the connectivity to an Apollo Server. You simply need to connect the TApolloTable, TApolloQuery, or TApolloStoredProc components to a TApolloConnection, which is connected to an Apollo Database Server. It's that simple.

Apollo VCL can be used with the Professional Editions of Borland products thereby saving money on development costs too. The Client/Server and Enterprise Editions of Delphi and C++Builder can be used, but are not necessary. And of course, the BDE is not needed. Delphi 4 and 5 and C++Builder 4 and 5 are supported.

Using Apollo OLE DB

Support for connecting Apollo OLE DB Provider to the Apollo Database Server is available with Apollo OLE DB 6.0. Simply set the connection string "Access Method" property from "amLocal" to "amServer".

Using Apollo ASP

Support for connecting Apollo ASP web pages to the Apollo Database Server is available with Apollo ASP 6.0. Full support via Apollo SQL is provided using the same connection properties as with the other Apollo engines.

Requirements

Apollo Database Server is an application that can be deployed on a Windows NT/2000/XP/Vista. The Apollo server can run on Windows 95 and Windows 98, however the threading model in Windows 95 and Windows 98 is not efficient and prevents Apollo Server from operating at optimal speed.

It is highly recommended that the deployment computer be running NT, 2000, XP or Vista equipped with solid processing power (i.e. PIII 500) and substantial memory (i.e. 128Meg). The actual requirements for Apollo Database Server to operate are significantly lower, however, serious performance gains can be achieved simply by using respectable hardware for the server.

Performance

Apollo Database Server delivers features found in high-priced DBMS products costing many thousands of dollars more. Our thread-based architecture effortlessly manages tens, hundreds or even thousands of simultaneous users. Network speed is vital so Apollo Database Server ensures that your end-users experience outstanding performance even over slow network connections such as 56K modem dial-up. We invite you to compare Apollo Database Server performance to competing products and see for yourself.

2-User Edition FREE!

Developers can download a free copy of the Apollo Database Server 2-User Edition, which supports two concurrent users. Unlike "Local" servers offered by competing products, the Apollo 2-User Server is full-featured and it works in both local and remote mode. This is an ideal solution for distributing eval or demo copies of your client/server software.
